A winemaking internship at The Wine Group involves hands-on experience in the various stages of the winemaking process, providing a comprehensive understanding of the winemaking techniques and the industry. Interns work closely with winemakers, cellar, laboratory, and vineyard teams, gaining practical knowledge in tasks such as grape harvesting, crushing, fermentation, barrel aging, analytical chemistry, and bottling.
Throughout the internship, participants have the opportunity to develop project management and leadership skills through their ownership of wine trials, testing, and final presentations to leadership. Additionally, interns gain insights into winemaking’s business side, including winery management.
Overall, a winemaking internship at TWG provides a well-rounded experience that combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on practice, preparing individuals for long-term successful careers in the wine industry.
The internship is a six-month program from June through December where the student can spend an entire harvest season working alongside some of the best winemaking teams in the industry at one of 8 locations, including:
Sonoma County, CA – Livermore, CA – Monterey County, CA – Ripon, CA – Madera, CA – Fresno, CA – Sanger, CA – Westfield, NY
Learn about sustainable growing practices, sample different grape varietals, and help make picking decisions.
Learn about the important responsibilities of racking, blending, solids management, filtration, shipping, barrel work, and sanitation.
Learn the entire winemaking process from grape receipt, crush, fermentation, and additions to final product tastings.
Learn to run all the equipment in a winery laboratory and put that Wine Chemistry class to good use!
Interns participate in conducting trial programs that improve wine quality, efficiency, and processes. Near the end of the internship, interns present their findings to winery leadership and often influence process improvements and future capital projects.
